Local fertiliser solution on the horizon
With fertiliser costs rising and supply becoming increasingly uncertain, growers are being forced to rethink how they secure one of their most critical inputs. An Australian company, PlasmaLeap Technologies, is developing a different approach - one that could bring fertiliser production closer to the farm.
Backed by a recent $30 million Series A funding round led by global investors including the Gates Foundation and Yara Growth Ventures, PlasmaLeap is developing decentralised fertiliser systems designed to produce nitrogen products locally, using just air, water and renewable electricity.
Instead of relying solely on imported fertiliser, the model focuses on regional production hubs or on-farm systems. For growers, this could mean more stable pricing, improved supply certainty, and reduced exposure to global market shocks.
The technology is particularly suited to horticulture and protected cropping. It can produce inputs commonly used in fertigation and hydroponics, including nitric acid and nitrate-based fertilisers, with the flexibility to integrate into existing systems. Products can also be stored for later use, giving growers more control over timing and application.
PlasmaLeap is now exploring potential sites for regional fertiliser hubs in key horticulture regions, including Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley in Southern Queensland.
To support ongoing development, the company is seeking input from growers to make sure the solution fits on-farm needs.
Understanding how fertiliser is currently used - application methods, volumes, timing, and pain points - will help shape how these systems are designed, sized, and deployed.
For growers, this is an opportunity to help influence a new approach to fertiliser supply. One that aims to be more reliable, local, and responsive to industry needs.
There may also be opportunities to be involved in early-stage pilots or access future systems as they roll out.
