Updated Fixed Term Contract Information Sheet

A new version of the Fixed Term Contract Information Statement (FTCIS) is now available. This update reflects recent changes to the rules and exceptions around the use of fixed term contracts.

Since 6 December 2023, limits have applied to how businesses can use fixed term contracts, including how long they can run for, how many times they can be renewed and when consecutive contracts are allowed. There are some exceptions for particular industries and situations and until now, many of these exceptions were only temporary.

Changes from 1 November 2025

  • Some temporary exceptions will end – this applies to higher education and public hospital sectors

  • Some exceptions will be extended until 1 November 2026, with extra requirements – this mainly affects charities, not-for-profit organisations, and medical/health research sectors.

  • Some exceptions will become permanent – this includes organised and high-performance sport.

For most farming and agricultural businesses, the standard fixed term contract rules will continue to apply unless you fall under one of the special categories above.

More detail is available in the Fair Work news article.

What should employers do?

If you are putting an employee on a fixed term contract, you must give them the current version of the FTCIS when the contract begins. For any fixed term contracts that start on or after 1 November 2025, make sure you provide the updated FTCIS.
